Mycelium Materials BioDesign
I took a Mycelium Masterclass through Osmose Studio and learned how to grow objects from mycelium. Below is featured my candle holder.

Key Takeaways
-
Materials can be grown without synthetic additives because the process mimics a natural stage of a fungi’s life cycle
-
Designing with mycelium is like pausing its growth for a bit while in use because its rebirth will happen when it returns to the soil
-
Adapt: “Living things often do things you didn’t want them to do or didn’t expect”

We discussed the biodesign process including spawning, substrates, composites, incubation and neutralization periods, and of course decomposition. Understanding the biological elements at play as the mycelium reaches out to colonize a given substrate and the fungi acting like a binder around the substrate (its food), creating a composite (the object you're working with.

I'm excited to keep experimenting and with this incredible life force and see what can be cocreated next!
